Fear & Greed Index Explained: How to Use It in Crypto Trading

The Fear & Greed Index is one of the most popular sentiment tools in crypto. It's also one of the most misused.

Here's the truth: the Fear & Greed Index is a useful signal when used correctly — and a dangerous trap when used as a standalone trading system.

How It Works

The index aggregates multiple data sources into a single 0-100 score: volatility, market momentum, social volume, surveys, dominance, and Google Trends. 0 = Extreme Fear, 100 = Extreme Greed.

When It Works

✅ Extremes Are Signals

When the index hits Extreme Fear (below 20), it's historically been a buying opportunity. When it hits Extreme Greed (above 80), it's historically been time to take profits. These extremes work because they represent consensus — and in markets, consensus is usually wrong at turning points.

✅ Contrarian Context

The index's value isn't the number itself — it's the direction of change. A Fear & Greed reading moving from 30 to 50 (fear fading) is bullish. Same index moving from 70 to 50 (greed fading) is bearish.

When It Fails

❌ As a Trading Signal

"Buy when Fear, sell when Greed" sounds good in theory. In practice, the market can stay in one zone for weeks. Buying at Fear 10 and watching it drop to Fear 5 requires conviction that the index alone can't provide.

❌ In Strong Trends

During bull markets, the index can stay in Greed for months. Selling at the first Greed reading means missing most of the trend.
